The Centennial School District and the Centennial Education Association, which represents 336 teachers, have reached an agreement that will restore approximately six teaching positions that were eliminated in an effort to balance the 2010-11 budget.
“Some teachers who were reduced from full time to part time will have some or all of the reduced time restored,” said Superintendent Steve Rector. “Other teachers whose part-time positions were reduced completely will be restored to part time.”
The district had previously reduced its work force for the upcoming school year by approximately 35 teachers in order to balance its budget, which had a gap of about $4 million. The deal with the union saves the district $500,000.
Like all the state’s school districts, Rector said Centennial is awaiting the next state budget forecast, scheduled to come out next month.
“Any downturn in state revenues that prompts the governor to make cuts like that announced at the end of May will cause school districts to have to respond in some manner,” he said.
The agreement extends the current collective bargaining agreement – which was set to expire June 30, 2011 – through June 30, 2012.
