Two people were injured at a home in east Portland when it caught on fire after careless disposal of smoking materials at 6:49 a.m. Monday, July 26.
A 54-year-old man, who is disabled, was able to crawl to the door of the residence at 14535 S.E. Rhine St. and was carried out of the home by his brother, said Paul Corah, public information officer for Portland Fire & Rescue.
The man was taken to Portland Adventist Medical Center suffering from smoke inhalation.
Another man burnt his hand while trying to fight the fire with a garden hose, but was not taken to the hospital, Corah said.
There were four people in the home at the time of the fire, an 84-year-old female and three men, ages 50, 54 and 58.
Gresham Fire & Emergency Services was the third engine on the scene and helped take care of the homeowner, Corah said.
The estimated value of the home was $220,000 and the structural loss is estimated to be $150,000, while the home’s contents are considered a complete loss.
